Sunday December 6th was an eventful one in the NFL. While it added some clarity for playoff races, other teams showed real weaknesses that could come back to haunt them in the playoffs or the chance to even make it. So here is your Monday Moments for 12.7.20Aaron Rodgers400 career TD's faster than anyone has ever done it, 193 games. Also has thrown for 35 TD's in 5 different seasons, 1st player in NFL history to have more than 4 such seasons. The man is somehow breaking these records and having the quietest MVP type season I can remember. The main focus is how many off angle throws Mahomes made or what commentator said what dumb thing this week and there goes A-rod just putting up stupid numbers each week while no one notices. Admittedly as a Steelers fan I have always loathed Rodgers but seeing him on The Pat McAfee show on his normal Tuesday hit, I have gained a huge chunk of respect for him and realize his coldness with the media is based on being misquoted and taken out of context and not him actually being the jerk he's made out to be. Rather than include a clip of the game, which he was excellent in, I am including a clip from one of the best interviews he's done on Pat's show to get a better idea of the type of dude he is. Seattle Seahawks/New York GiantsWasn't sure exactly which side to go with on this so I just took the game overall. Starting with the Seahawks, what is going on with "Mr. Unlimited"? Russ was a clear MVP winner after 5 weeks and has seen the MVP slip away as well as possibly his chance to make something happen in the playoffs. The defense wasn't playing great to begin with but letting Russ cook was working and they were dominant on offense. Now the D is still really bad and without Russ getting 400yds/4TDs/No turnovers the entire team looks lost. Which brings us to the other side of this game which is the Joe Judge led, suddenly looking well put together defensive team in the New York Giants. They still have a long way to go to be considered good, but the defense has looked impressive lately and they frustrated the Seahawks all day. Not to mention in the cesspool that is the NFC East, they hold the lead over Washington and could make a real run at the playoffs after looking like one of the worst teams in the league early on. By far a non-MVP caliber performance for either but the interesting storylines on both sides put it in MVP Moments this week. The New York Jets - aka how not to cover a game ending hail mary.See the Terrible. Stupid. Risky. Ballsy. Many different ways to look at the way the Jets decided to handle the end of their game vs the Raiders but no matter what you think of the call they made, the execution was awful. I've seen many different stats thrown around about how bad of an idea it is to send 7/8 guys against a hail mary and how little that happens in the past 15 years of the NFL so we'll just say that no one does it. Either cover 4 or cover 3, keep everyone in front of you and if the ball goes up, high point it and slap it down, don't even try for the INT. Well the Jets decided that they knew better than everyone and sent 8, left a DB that had been burnt the play before, 1on1 vs Henry Ruggs (who ran a 4.27 forty and by all accounts is faster than that) and got torched for a walk off TD. Now this as stated above is a bad strategy by all accounts and is embarrassing in itself, but the other part I'm not seeing mentioned as much is this: if you send 8, how do you not get to the QB or at least affect him enough to make the throw miss? It's one thing to buck the trend and think differently but the entire point of sending 8 is to get to the QB and they didn't even do that which is even worse to me. So this begs the inevitable question, was it intentional to lose the game and keep the Jets as the front runner in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes? Really seems that way with the decision and lack of execution. See the link for the whole final sequence and tell me what you think. Well with the holiday, the games being pushed around like a skinny 6th grader, and waiting to see the Monday night game, the 2nd installment of Monday Moments comes to you on this Tuesday, 1st of December
Not much else to say besides take a look at that stat line. That's what happens when you try to get after Mahomes and leave "Cheetah" in single coverage. Beyond dominant in the 1st half, the adjustment to play more coverage over the top slowed Hill down but then just contributed to the other guys on the team, namely Kelce, having a big day as well. Not sure if there is a game plan to stop the weapons on this team, go after Mahomes and he burns you for 70+ yard TDs, play zone and he'l pick you apart 8 yards at a time. Playoffs will tell but they look primed for another deep run.
Note to self: Don't try to get in the head of one of the most physically impressive WRs in the game (possibly ever) by talking trash about how he isn't on Megatron's level yet. Schwartz didn't figure that calling DK out in warmups would put a chip on his shoulder and it bit the Eagles Defense royally. While not as audacious a stat line as Tyreek Hill's, the physicality of some of the catches and run after made it clear that Metcalf came to play and wasn't having any of the talk about not being in Megatron territory yet. Roger Goodell/NFLThis one is a reverse MVP due to the beyond embarrassing gaffes by the league this weekend. Between the still ongoing fiasco with the Steelers/Ravens game that looks more and more like the NFL trying to let Baltimore get healthy ahead of the big division game, and the lack of any competitive consideration for the Broncos being down all 4 QB's on the roster. Elway asked for an extra day to figure out some kind of game plan and was told to figure it out. Fully understanding that the NFL is doing everything it can to not only get this season in, but to avoid a Week 18 as well, I can be sympathetic to a very complex and nuanced problem. However in doing so, the ridiculous lack of consistency from team to team is impossible to ignore. Especially given the specific case of the Ravens whos strength coach intentionally was in the facility without a mask, and removed his contact tracing bracelet as well. NFL talks big about laying down punishment based on the factors involved in Covid outbreaks, but the Ravens intentionally violated protocol and are not being held to the same standard as the rest of the league.
