Welcome to the absolute nadir of the sporting calendar. The barren wasteland. The July Doldrums. The sports equivalent of that one relative who shows up to Thanksgiving with a casserole made of mayonnaise and regret.
If you’ve turned on the TV in the last 48 hours, you’ve likely stared blankly at a screen broadcasting either an obscure mid-afternoon regular-season baseball game (where the only drama is whether the third-base coach will ever stop chewing sunflower seeds like he’s trying to solve world hunger) or… the WNBA (a hornets’ nest we are definitely not poking today). Point is, the World Cup is a distant memory, NFL training camps are still a cruelly long week or two away, and rookie camps haven’t fully kicked into gear.
We have officially hit the wall where sports television consists of golf re-runs, extreme cornhole, and studio hosts desperately debating whether a quarterback’s recent vacation choice affects his legacy. It’s dark times, sports fans. But take a deep breath. We will survive this together. Preferably with snacks.
Phase 1: Denying the Present
Right now, you’re expected to pretend that mid-summer baseball in the blistering heat is keeping you on the absolute edge of your seat. It’s okay to admit the truth: most of us are just waiting for October so we can dust off that faded team hat from the back of the closet, slap on a jersey, and pretend we’ve been tracking pitch counts and WHIP statistics since April.
“Oh yeah, huge fan. Never doubted ’em for a second,” you’ll say with absolute conviction to your co-worker in two months while casually dropping “advanced metrics” you just Googled in the bathroom. We won’t tell a soul. Your secret of selective amnesia is safe with us.
Pro-Tip for July: If anyone asks why you’re not watching, you’re just “saving your energy for the stretch run.” Bonus points if you say it while staring into the middle distance like a man who’s seen too much.
Phase 2: Manifesting the Autumn Refresh
Instead of staring into the vast, empty void of the summer lull, close your eyes and breathe in the glorious autumn waiting for us just around the corner:
- The Sights & Smells: Crisp fall air, hickory BBQ smoke billowing from a tailgate grill at 8:00 AM, and the majestic sight of an overgrown lawn you swore you’d mow after the 1:00 PM games… right after this next beer… and maybe the one after that.
- College Football Tailgates: Where eating three bratwursts before noon while wearing full face paint is not only socially acceptable—it’s practically a moral obligation. Judging people for their life choices starts after kickoff.
- NFL Sunday Debauchery: Vicious divisional rivalries, soul-crushing fantasy football bad beats, and screaming at a multi-millionaire on your TV for failing to pick up a third-and-two like he just personally insulted your mother.
- NHL Pure Chaos: The glorious return of ice-level warfare, 100 mph slapshots, bone-crushing open-ice hits, and teeth flying across the blue line like stray Chiclets. Civilization temporarily suspended. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
That is the promised land. We are almost there. The light at the end of the tunnel is shaped like a football helmet and it smells faintly of stadium nachos.
Hang In There, Legends
So hang tight, clear out the tailgate gear, stretch out those couch muscles, and prepare your vocal cords for September. The sports hibernation is almost over.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to go re-watch highlights from three years ago just to remember what a touchdown looks like… and maybe cry a little into our offseason-themed beverage of choice.
We’ll see you on the other side. Bring the brats.
